    Understanding sunscreen fabrics

Sun protection is to prevent UVA and UVB,the fabric is represented by the UPF value (ultraviolet protection factor),the higher the UPF value, the better the sun protection effect of the fabric.UPF 50+ fabrics are considered excellent sunscreen fabrics, blocking at least 98% of UV rays. UPF 50+ means that 1/50 of the UV light can penetrate. UPF 15-24: Daily outdoor activities; UPF 25-39: Outdoor exercise and prolonged exposure to sunlight; UPF 40-50+ : Strong sunlight and prolonged outdoor activities. China's "Evaluation of Textile UV Protection Performance" standard stipulates that only when the UPF of the product is greater than 40, and the UVA transmission rate is less than 5%, it can be called UV protection products.

Factors affecting the sunscreen performance of fabrics

Normally, the sunscreen performance of fabrics is determined by the following aspects:

    1. Fiber type

There are three main categories of anti-ultraviolet fabrics, namely natural fibers and chemical fibers, and fabrics finished by anti-ultraviolet additives. Among the natural fibers, hemp fiber has the best sunscreen effect, wool is slightly better, cotton and silk are generally. Among the chemical fibers, polyester fiber (polyester) has the best effect, followed by nylon.

Anti-ultraviolet finishing is the selection of appropriate fabrics, in different ways, with sunscreen additives to treat the fabric to achieve higher sunscreen indicators, make a special sunscreen products!

    2. Fiber density

Fiber density refers to the number of fibers in a unit area. The denser the fiber, the better the sun protection.

    3. Fabric structure

Tightly woven fabrics can provide better sun protection, while loosely woven fabrics may allow more UV light to penetrate.

    4. Fabric color

Dark fabrics usually have a better sunscreen effect than light fabrics, such as black, red, navy, dark blue, dark purple sunscreen effect is good.

    5. Sun Protection Index

The UPF index represents the fabric's ability to block UV rays, and the higher the value, the better the protection.

The UVA index represents UVA transmittance, and the lower the value, the better the sun protection.
